CTEF Tile and Installation Course
Introduction to Ceramic
Tile: A general
introduction to the ceramic tile industry, ceramic tile, and
the installation process.
Instructor will discuss:
different types of tile and how they are manufactured, the
materials used to install ceramic tile, industry accepted
installation methods
Course objective: Students
should have: a broad overview of the ceramic tile industry,
methods and standards
Schedule:
8:00-8:15 Orientation- Instructor and Student introductions
and rules of the classroom
8:15-9:30 Ceramic tile - The instructor will discuss various
kinds of ceramic tile, how they are made and used, and provide
a brief look at the tile industry
Learning objective: At the end of this lesson, students will:
* Have an overview of the ceramic tile industry.
* Understand the most common types of ceramic tile and how
they are manufactured.
* Understand COF, Freeze/Thaw and Wear Ratings.
* Understand the basics of standard grade under ANSI A137.1
9:30-9:45 Break
9:45-10:45 Understanding the TCA and ANSI Handbooks. The instructor
will discuss the industry guidelines, substrate requirements
and manufacturer's proprietary methods and standards.
Learning objective: At the end of this lesson, students will
be able to:
* Understand substrate requirements
* Understand how to read and reference the TCA and ANSI Handbooks
* Understand how to choose the proper installation method
* Understand what a proprietary installation method is and
how they affect and are integrated into industry guidelines
10:45-12:00 Understanding basic setting materials and their
application- The Instructor will discuss various thinsets,
grouts, and backerboards.
Learning objective: At the end of this lesson, students will
be able to:
* Understand how to select appropriate bonding material
* Understand how to select the appropriate grout
* Understand how to select the appropriate backerboard

Ceramic Tile and Installation
Course Introduction:

8:30-9:45 Ceramic tile - Instructor will discuss various kinds
of ceramic tile, how they are made and used and provide a
brief history of tile.
Learning objective: At the end of this lesson, students will:
* Understand the most common types of ceramic tile and how
they are manufactured.
* Understand the performance characteristics of ceramic tile
and how it affects their use in a given application.
9:45-10:00 Break
10:00-12:00 Understanding the TCA and ANSI Handbooks methods
and standards. The instructor will discuss the industry guidelines,
work requirements of related trades, and manufactures proprietary
methods and standards.
* Understand how to read and reference the TCA and ANSI Handbooks
* Understand what a proprietary installation method is and
how they are integrated into industry guidelines
* How to appropriately select installation methods
12:00-1:00 Lunch
1:00-2:45 Installation Preparation, Layout, and Setting Materials:
The instructor will discuss appropriate floor preparation,
selection, and application of setting materials and other
products common to ceramic tile installation. Instructor will
demonstrate proper troweling techniques for thinset, grout,
backerboard, and membranes
Learning objective: At the end of this lesson, students will:
* Understand the requirements for wood and concrete substrates
* Understand the importance of proper layout
* Understand dryset, latex, and polymer thinsets
* Understand various types of membranes, their use and installation
* Understand various backerboards, their properties, and proper
installation
* Understand cementious and epoxy grout

1:00-1:30 Ceramic tile tools, use, safety, and care...The instructor
will present and discuss numerous ceramic tile tools and safety
issues involving their use. Also to be presented are safety
issues related to the installation process as they apply both
to the installer and end user.
Learning objective: At the end of this lesson students will
understand:
* The importance of a safe work environment
* Safe use of basic hand and power tools used in the installation
process
* Appropriate safety measures to protect individuals and the
installation from harm.
1:30-2:30 Surface preparation and layout. The instructor will
discuss the basic differences in surface prep and layout different
from other floorcovering including the importance of control/expansion
joints.
Learning objective: At the end of this lesson the student will
understand
* Importance of proper surface preparation and layout.
* Importance of expansion and control joints
2:30-2:45 Break
2:45-4:00 Thinset applications and bonding techniques: The
instructor will present and demonstrate the requirements for
bonding ceramic tile and/or backerboard.
Learning objective: At the end of this lesson students will
understand:
* Understand the limitations of the products and how they
are used as part of an overall floor system.
* The importance of proper material selection
* The importance of proper coverage
* How to properly bed large unit tile
* How to properly install backerboard
Day 2
8:00-9:45 Ceramic tile Floors, Installation Theory and Technique
The instructor will discuss and demonstrate various thinbed
installation methods and tile cutting techniques. The students
will use this time to install tile and backerboard in the classroom
modules.
Learning objective: At the end of this lesson students will
be able to:
* Understand the process for a basic floor tile installation

10:00-12:00 Ceramic tile Floors, Installation Theory and Technique
(Cont.)
12:00-1:00 Lunch
1:00-3:00 Grouting and Finishing Techniques: The instructor
will demonstrate and discuss various grouting product types,
techniques and equipment required to grout. Expansion joints
will also be discussed and demonstrated.
Learning objective: At the end of this lesson students will
be able to:
* Understand how to select, mix, apply, and finish grout joints
and sealants.
* Understand how to finish basic residential expansion joints.
3:00-4:00 Removal and disposal of materials from modules
4:00- Question and Answer session, pick your subject.
